Indian equities staged a strong recovery on October 13, led by large caps.

The Sensex rose 1.54% to 73,033.78 and the Nifty 50 climbed 1.60% to 22,721.95, the biggest one-day gains among the major indices. The BSE 500 and Nifty 500 each added 1.22%, closing at 34,540.95 and 22,090.00. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 1.06%, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 lagged with a rise of just 0.11%.
Large caps are still well below where they started the year. The Sensex is down 14.30% year to date and the Nifty 50 is down 13.04%, while the Nifty 500 has held up better, down 7.46%. October has turned slightly positive, with the Sensex up 0.76% and the Nifty 50 up 0.45%, which hints at some stabilisation. Over one month, though, most indices are still lower, with losses between 2.31% and 4.52% reflecting September’s volatility.

The split between segments remains wide. The BSE SmallCap index is up 10.43% this year and 6.59% over one year, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 is up 9.79% and 7.43% over the same periods. The BSE LargeCap index is down 11.80% for the year and 9.22% over twelve months. The Nifty Midcap 100 is down 1.70% year to date but up 1.19% over one year. Over six months, smallcaps have gained between 11.21% and 12.01%, while large caps have lost between 6.74% and 7.03%.

Investors appear to be favouring smaller, domestically focused companies while large caps struggle with valuation pressure and possible earnings worries. Today’s bounce suggests some tactical buying, but the year-to-date losses call for caution, and falls over the past month across all segments hint at fatigue. The Nifty Next 50, up 0.63% for the year, may point to rotation opportunities. For now, selective stock picking looks safer than broad index exposure, with close attention to earnings quality and valuations.
