Indian equities rallied in the latest session, but the gains were confined to large caps.

The Sensex rose 2.11% to 74,315.61 and the Nifty 50 advanced 1.66% to 22,997.35. The BSE 500 added 0.74% to 34,738.24 and the Nifty 500 gained 0.65% to 22,180.80. Mid and smallcaps moved the other way, with the Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.36% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 down 1.31%.

October has been kind to large caps so far. The Sensex is up 2.53% for the month and the Nifty 50 is up 1.67%. The year is a different story. The Sensex is still down 12.80%, the Nifty 50 is down 11.99%, and the BSE LargeCap index is down 10.79%. Over twelve months, the Sensex has lost 10.04% and the Nifty 50 has lost 9.19%. Midcaps have limited their year-to-date losses to 2.46% for the BSE MidCap index and 2.13% for the Nifty Midcap 100.

Smallcaps remain the strongest segment over longer periods. The BSE SmallCap index is up 10.96% this year and 8.61% over one year, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 is up 8.00% year to date. Over six months, the BSE SmallCap index has gained 12.14%, while large-cap indices have fallen between 5.35% and 6.75%. The Nifty Midcap 100 is roughly flat over a year, up 0.39%. The BSE LargeCap index has lost 6.43% over three months and 7.63% over one year, so selling pressure on large caps shows up in every period.

Today’s bounce looks like selective buying in heavyweight stocks, not a broad turn. With large caps lagging for so long, there may be deeper concerns about fundamentals. Smallcaps have been in a strong phase while large caps are in correction, which suggests investors are chasing growth in smaller companies and staying wary of blue-chip valuations. Three-month and six-month trends are negative for most segments, so near-term momentum looks fragile.
