Indian equities closed higher on October 16, with large caps doing the lifting.

The Sensex gained 0.56% to 74,729.27 and the Nifty 50 rose 0.65% to 23,146.15. The BSE 500 added 0.31% to 34,846.05. Mid and smallcaps were mixed: the BSE MidCap index slipped 0.21%, the Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.11% and the BSE SmallCap index edged up 0.26%.

October has split the market in two. The Sensex is up 3.10% for the month and the Nifty 50 is up 2.32%, and the BSE LargeCap index has gained 1.40%. Broader segments are lagging, with the BSE MidCap index down 0.67% and the BSE SmallCap index down 1.73%. For the year, large caps are still in the red, with the Sensex down 12.31% and the Nifty 50 down 11.42%. The BSE SmallCap index is up 9.65% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 is up 7.99% over the same period.

Over twelve months, the Sensex is down 10.47% and the BSE LargeCap index is down 7.72%. Smallcaps are ahead, with the BSE SmallCap index up 5.99% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 up 5.50%. The BSE MidCap index sits in between, down 2.17%. So the near-term leadership of large caps has not yet erased their longer-term underperformance.

The October rebound suggests large-cap valuations may be stabilising after heavy losses, and the preference for liquidity and quality points to cautious sentiment. Smallcaps have kept their longer-term strength, but this month’s weakness in midcaps and smallcaps calls for care. Three-month and six-month returns are negative for most indices, so the market looks to be consolidating. Defensive positioning in large caps will likely continue until a clearer catalyst appears.
